Jed Spence: Everyone at Tottenham backs Ange Postecoglou

Jed Spence insists the entire Tottenham squad are backing manager Ange Postecoglou and are committed to turning things around this season.

Spurs suffered a potentially heavy 1-0 defeat at AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, leaving them with some serious work to do if they are to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

Tottenham's exit at the last 16 stage, coupled with a poor run of results in the domestic league over the past few months – amid a serious injury crisis – will increase the pressure on Postecoglou, who have failed to build on their impressive fifth-place finish last season.

Spurs look to put their Premier League disappointment back into perspective ahead of Thursday's return leg against AZ and host Bournemouth at Stadium 17 on Sunday.

The Cherries won the return leg 1-0 in December and Spence had to lead manager Postecoglou away from a group of disgruntled Tottenham fans at the Vitality Stadium.

When asked about the incident, Spence replied: “He's the manager of a football club, you know. He's the manager and we're a team and a family.

“When someone in your family is in trouble or in a difficult situation, you go to support them. That's what I did, supported the manager. At the end of the day, we're all fighting for him and that's our main job as a team.

“We believe in what he wants us to do. We try to implement it in every game. Of course, it doesn't always work out, but the manager has our full support.

“We're all behind him and we want to show it by winning games. We didn't win (Thursday), but we'll win next week.”

Tottenham have little chance of success in the Premier League, with European qualification unlikely given they are 10 points behind Bournemouth with just 11 games left in the season. However, Sunday's game offers an opportunity to get fit ahead of the visit to AZ.

Spence added: “There's always something to play for. We're aiming to win as many games as possible and when that happens we'll see where we are at the end of the season.”

“We have to play better (than Thursday). We can definitely turn things around. We are a good team and we will turn things around on Thursday.”

Spurs' fitness problems this season have given Spence a chance to salvage his career at the club and he has emerged as a key positive during a difficult winter period.

The versatile former Nottingham Forest defender's form has sparked speculation over whether he could be a regular in Thomas Tuchel's England squad, but the 24-year-old confirmed on Thursday night that he is not among the 55 players the German manager has discussed with over possible selection.

“No, I haven't heard from anyone. My focus right now is on playing well and helping the team win,” Spence said.

“Who doesn't want to play for their country? That's what I'm aiming for. If I get called up, those will be happy days. If not, I'll just keep working hard.”
