Jamie Carragher disappointed, Trent Alexander-Arnold wants to leave boyhood club

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher cannot understand why homegrown player Trent Alexander-Arnold does not see his long-term future at Anfield amid rumours of a possible move to Real Madrid this week.

The 26-year-old England right-back, along with other key players such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, is out of contract this summer and they are understood to have agreed terms for a free transfer to the Spanish club.

Liverpool-born Alexander-Arnold made his debut for the club in 2016 aged 18 and has won the Champions League, Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. He now has a real chance of winning a second title as the club sit 12 points clear of their rivals.

The news of Alexander-Arnold's intention to leave the team did not bring joy to Liverpool fans.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher said: “There doesn't seem to be anything that people are angry about – not that he left for free, not that he should have given the club notice earlier. People are angry for a number of reasons.

“I'm not angry that he's leaving for free. I think as a local player and a Liverpool fan, the club is in a situation where they're fighting for the league and the European Cup every year.

“So if you're a Liverpool fan and a local player, I'm just sad that he doesn't think it's important.

“I put myself in his shoes and think we could match Manchester United in terms of trophies. I have another seven or eight years at Liverpool and I want to beat them by three or four years by winning a couple more European Cups.”

Alexander-Arnold has faced criticism for his defensive performances during his time with Liverpool and came under fire when the team drew 2-2 with Manchester United in January.

It comes just a week after rumours first emerged of his move to Real Madrid and Carragher believes his defensive performances will be more questioned in La Liga.

He added: “There is a perception that Trent won't be as vulnerable defensively as he is in the Premier League, but this is the top league. Real Madrid are aiming to win the Champions League every season.

“If you find yourself in the quarter-finals against Bayern and let your team down by conceding a few goals, then the situation becomes tense.”
