The father of four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen, who lives with the daughter of the legendary Nelson Piquet, 54-year-old Dutchman Jos Verstappen, was involved in a terrible accident during a rally near Namur (Belgium), Bild reports.
VIDEO OF THE DAY
The former Formula 1 driver, while driving a Skoda Fabia RS Rally 2, lost control of the car on a high-speed section of the track and crashed into a tree. The impact caused the car, which had a wheel torn off, to overturn and end up in the bushes. Miraculously, Verstappen himself and his compatriot co-driver Jasper Vermeulen (who urgently replaced Renault's permanent co-driver Jamul, who had broken his ankle) escaped unharmed from the wreckage.

“There was gravel and I think I went into the corner too fast. The car skidded on the exit of the corner. We hit a tree, then the car spun around and we landed on the roof. The most important thing is that Jasper and I got out of the car unharmed. It was a serious accident, but it shows that we drive safe cars. I’m glad we avoided injuries,” said Jos Verstappen .
We should add that Verstappen Sr. participated in 107 Formula 1 races from 1994 to 2003, reaching the podium twice (he was third at the 1994 Hungarian and Belgian Grand Prix).

Jos also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which he won in 2008. He later moved on to rallying and achieved his greatest success there last year, becoming Belgian champion.
