Evan Ferguson shrugs off criticism during goal drought

Evan Ferguson has revealed he has learnt to ignore outside opinions after helping Ireland secure Nations League B status with his first goal since November.

The 20-year-old forward, who is on loan at West Ham from Brighton, scored the equaliser to help Ireland beat Bulgaria 2-1 in the second leg of their play-off on Sunday night, securing a 4-2 aggregate victory.

Ferguson, whose last goal for club or country came against Finland four months ago, has since been hailed as one of the country's brightest hopes, although he has struggled in recent months.

Asked how he copes with the weight of expectations, he said: “I can't do anything about it, can I? Honestly, it's other people who have expectations of you.

“Of course you have your own expectations and you want to succeed every time you step on the field, but you can't fully control the opinions of others.”

When asked if he had learned to ignore the noise, he replied, “Yeah, I think so. I've had more failures than successes lately, so I've gotten used to it. I really don't care what anyone says.”

Ferguson has played just a handful of minutes for Molotov since his winter loan move, when he faced international duty and played only a small part in Thursday night's win over Plovdiv.
