Roy Keane made his return to Instagram with a post alongside his friend and former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
He joked about the pair returning to management, captioning the post: “DM us if you’re looking to hire a manager.”
It comes following Solskjaer’s appearance on the Stick to Football podcast, which Keane co-hosts along with Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott and Ian Wright.
The former Ireland and Manchester United captain has two million followers on Instagram, and delighted football fans with his posts, often making jokes at his own expense.
He has now returned to the social media platform after previously de-activating his account.
Keane revealed he drove across Norway for eight hours to visit Solskjaer in his home town of Kristiansund, after the former striker was sacked as Manchester United manager.
“We fancied a trip. He was feeling a bit low, obviously I wanted to cheer him up. So, yeah, I drove up and it was lovely.”
Solskjaer led United to consecutive top four finishes, and a number of promising cup campaigns, including a Europa League that United narrowly missed out on following a penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal in the final.
The podcast appearance has led to many fans reminiscing about his time at United and the positive football his team played, especially given the club’s current struggles under Erik ten Hag.
It highlights the fickle nature of the sport, as Solskjaer’s reign ended with many supporters having turned against him.
Keane knows that story all too well. He had positive spells in charge of Sunderland and Ipswich before moving on, while he was Martin O’Neill’s assistant during Ireland’s memorable Euro 2016 campaign, before that too ended badly.
Keane has often spoken about how managers are treated in modern football, and perhaps poking fun at this, he posted the picture of the smiling pair and hinted at a return to management.
While Solskjaer said he would be open to the right offer, Keane has previously indicated his time in management is behind him.
Speaking on Stick to Football, Solskjaer admitted that re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo may have been a mistake, despite insisting he felt it was the right move at the time.
He also revealed he encouraged United to sign star striker Erling Haaland, who went on to enjoy phenomenal success at their biggest rivals Manchester City
“The summer before I got here… I rang the club and said ‘You’ve got to sign this boy. He’ll be top class’.
“That was June, July 2018, and they said no. They had enough reports on players. Then I became the caretaker manager, and we’d sold Haaland to Red Bull Salzburg.
“I tell the club straight away to buy him while he has a release clause. We knew that then, and no one else would’ve paid the money… €20 million, it would’ve been a bargain.
“It was the club’s decision to not go for it then. We never made bids or went in for him, until after he started scoring for Salzburg.
“By then, Borussia Dortmund were there, Juventus were there, everyone was there. His release clause then was still good at €60 million.”
