David James hopes Alexander Isak can help Liverpool win multiple trophies

Former goalkeeper David James believes Liverpool need striker Alexander Isak to win trophies both domestically and in Europe.

The former England international admits the forward may not be the “most promising signing” due to Newcastle's £150m price tag, but the Reds' long-term interest in the Swedish striker shows how highly they value his potential.

It will be extremely difficult to pry Isak away from St James' Park, even though the player did not join the squad for their pre-season tour of South Korea and has privately spoken of his desire to move to Anfield.

However, James insists Liverpool have carried out thorough preparations and are keen to see what contribution Isak can make to a side that won the Premier League title in Arne Slot's first season in charge but suffered disappointment in the Champions League.

“Arne is in a great position to defend the titles,” James told the PA news agency after a surprise visit to St Helens football team as part of an initiative organised by Carlsberg.

“Liverpool will do everything they can, but there is a bigger question: 'Can you dominate Europe?'

“Signing someone like Isak is not the most profitable decision, but if you want to succeed on multiple levels, you need a squad like that.

“If Isak moves, it will be because Liverpool recognise the need for him, not because they have the funds to buy any player.

“It’s interesting that if you look at (Mohamed) Salah last season, he scored a lot of goals but what impressed me most was the number of assists he had.

“It will be interesting to see how much of an impact he can have on other players to surpass their past achievements, including Isak if that happens.”

“These players are coming into an environment where they are expected to improve, at the very least, and with Liverpool being the reigning Premier League champions, we hope that improvement will come in the form of another trophy.”
