Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has confirmed he has no plans to leave the club this summer but admitted the club could consider selling him following their heavy defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
The 30-year-old has been a rare shining light in a disappointing season at Old Trafford but even his influence was dimmed on Wednesday in Bilbao as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Premier League rivals Tottenham.
Fernandes was recently linked with a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, with manager Ruben Amorim saying United must do everything they can to keep hold of “one of the best players in the world”.
However, defeat in the Europa League final has financial implications as it means the team will not be able to participate in Champions League qualifying, and the lack of European football raises further questions over the captain's future.
“I have always said that I will stay here until the club decides it is time to leave,” Fernandes said. “I am determined to do more to bring the club back to success.
“The day the club decides that I have become a burden or that it is time to leave, football is unpredictable, you never know. But I have always said this and I will keep my word.
“If the club feels it's time to split up to make a bit of profit or something like that then so be it, that's what happens sometimes in football.”
Fernandes joined United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 and has just been named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the fourth time – a joint record with Cristiano Ronaldo and David De Gea.
The Portugal international's future is one of many questions facing United during a summer of transformation under Amorim, whose side currently sit 16th in the Premier League and are now unable to break the final barrier in Europe.
“We just agreed that he was the right man,” Fernandes said of his compatriot, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November.
