Andre Onana in the spotlight as Manchester United deny Lyon victory with last-minute equaliser

Under pressure from critics, Andre Onana was unable to prevent Ryan Cherki's equaliser in the dying minutes, giving Lyon a chance to open the scoring in the first leg of Manchester United's decisive quarter-final, which ended 2-2.

A pre-match verbal spat added further tension to the highlight of a season in which the Red Devils have not performed at their best, with Nemanja Matic responding furiously to Onana's comments that the Premier League side were “vastly superior” to the French outfit.

The former Lyon midfielder responded by calling Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history” and the Cameroonian keeper did nothing to stop the speculation when he conceded a first-half penalty from Thiago Almada.

Ruben Amorim's side turned the game around in impressive fashion and looked to be on course to return to Old Trafford after Leni Joro headed home in first-half stoppage time and substitute Zirkzee scored with two minutes remaining.

But there was another dramatic moment to come as the Cherkes responded quickly after Onana parried a superb strike from Georges Mikautadze in the fifth and final minute of added time, sparking wild celebrations at the Groupama Stadium.
