Woman pulled alive from collapsed building 91 hours after earthquake

Rescuers pulled a 63-year-old woman from the rubble of a building in Myanmar's capital on Tuesday, fading hopes of finding more survivors after the quake that killed at least 2,000 people and deepened a humanitarian crisis caused by a protracted civil war.

The Naypyitaw Fire Department said the woman was rescued on Tuesday morning, 91 hours after she was trapped under rubble caused by the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck at midday on Friday.

The quake's epicenter was near the country's second-largest city, Mandalay. The military government has so far reported 2,065 dead, more than 3,900 injured and 270 missing.

The figures are expected to rise as the quake affected much of the country, leaving many areas without electricity, telephone and mobile phone service, and damaging roads and bridges, making it difficult to assess the true extent of the destruction.

So far, most of the reports have come from Mandalay and Naypyitaw.

The World Health Organization said more than 10,000 buildings had collapsed or were badly damaged in central and northwestern Myanmar.

The earthquake also hit neighbouring Thailand, where a high-rise building under construction collapsed, trapping many workers.

Two bodies were pulled from the rubble on Monday, but dozens of people were still missing. In total, 20 people have died in Bangkok and 34 were injured, mostly at a construction site.
