UN official says 20 trucks carrying aid and food are waiting to arrive in Gaza

A UN official said 20 trucks carrying humanitarian aid, mostly food, were expected to arrive in the Gaza Strip on Monday.

The delivery comes after nearly three months of blockade and warnings from global experts of looming famine.

Israel said it would allow limited humanitarian aid into Gaza even as it launched “massive” new ground operations there.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that his decision to resume aid to Gaza was made under pressure from allies.

In a video message posted on social media, Mr Netanyahu said Israel's allies had expressed concern about “images of famine”.

“Israel's greatest friends in the world,” he said, without naming specific countries, said “there is one thing we cannot tolerate. We cannot accept images of famine, mass starvation. We cannot bear it. We will not be able to support you.”

He added: “So to be successful, we need to somehow solve this problem.”

He said the assistance provided would be “minimal,” but did not specify when exactly it would begin.

Mr Netanyahu had previously said a “hunger crisis” in Gaza could threaten a new offensive – the biggest since the ceasefire in March – and that “basic” food supplies would be allowed.

In early March, Israel cut off all supplies of food, medicine and other goods to the territory, home to more than two million people, to pressure Hamas over the terms of a ceasefire.

Israeli airstrikes over the weekend killed at least 103 people, including dozens of children, hospitals and doctors said.
