A passenger bus has plunged off a cliff in a mountainous area of Sri Lanka known for its tea plantations, killing 21 people and injuring 35.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning in the mountains near the town of Kotmale, about 86 miles east of the capital Colombo.
Police spokesman Buddhika Manatunga said 21 people had died and 35 others were being treated at a medical facility.
Local television showed the overturned bus lying at the bottom of the abyss as rescuers and others helped the victims.
The driver was also injured and was among those hospitalized.
At the time of the incident, there were about 50 people on the bus, which belonged to a state-owned tourism company.
Mr Manatunga said police had launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
