Such autonomy previously contributed to his appeal within the staunchly Republican district that consistently re-elected him eight times.
Increasingly, in Republican circles, independence presents hazards. The defining demarcation within today’s GOP no longer revolves solely around ideology. Republican voters are signaling diminished interest in a candidate’s conventional conservatism, placing greater emphasis on that candidate’s unwavering alignment with Trump.

Media figures, advocacy organizations, and digital fundraising platforms aligned with Trump can swiftly transform a primary into a national issue. The outcome is a party politically and culturally centered around Trump — displaying less tolerance for opposition, even when originating from conservatives with substantial credentials.
Massie's loss feels significant due to the fact that a majority of Republican voters concluded that ideological conservatism by itself was inadequate. He was rejected because Trump advised Republican voters to do so.
