Following his 80th birthday celebration, which included attending the UFC fight on the White House South Lawn on Sunday, President Donald Trump is slated to travel to France for a meeting with prominent global leaders at the annual G7 summit.

This gathering, set to take place in Évian-les-Bains, France, from June 15th to the 17th, marks the president’s fifth attendance at this international forum. The meeting occurs amidst significant global unrest, with ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine anticipated to be central themes on the summit’s agenda concerning economic and geopolitical matters.

This signifies the first in-person assembly for G7 leaders since the commencement of the U.S.-Iran war. Now in its 15th week, the conflict continues to affect the worldwide economy, leading to increased prices for fossil fuels and oil and gas. The war surprised U.S. allies, some of whom were reluctant to support the president’s requests, thus creating friction between Trump and certain G7 members.

A significant focus is expected on the Middle East, as Trump is scheduled to engage in one-on-one discussions with representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, according to a high-ranking administration official.

Although the previous week witnessed a considerable military escalation between the U.S. and Iran, Trump indicated on Sunday that an accord had been reached between the two nations, which would facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for approximately 20% of the global oil supply.

During last year’s G7 summit, Trump departed a day early due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Subsequently, that weekend, he initiated Operation Midnight Hammer targeting Iran’s nuclear installations.

Similar to the previous year, leaders aim to foster lasting peace in Ukraine. It has been four and a half years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the conflict is intensifying, particularly with Ukraine’s deployment of long-range drone strikes against Russia. Trump had repeatedly pledged his personal ability to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war on his inaugural day as president, and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to seek further support from allied nations.

Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with G7 leaders on Tuesday, as confirmed by a senior administration official, but no private meeting with Trump is currently arranged. Ukraine was also not identified as a primary objective for the U.S. at the summit, although the administration underscores that resolving the conflict remains one of the president’s “foremost priorities.”

The remaining six nations constituting the G7 coalition are France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. However, leaders from other countries are frequently invited to the annual gathering, with Zelenskyy reportedly expected to be present.

During a background briefing previewing the trip, a senior official from the White House administration stated that Trump’s objectives include addressing “economic growth and development, supply chain resilience, illegal immigration, and artificial intelligence,” in addition to fostering investment partnerships.

Since beginning his second term, Trump has experienced strained relations with other G7 leaders. Beyond causing other nations to question his actions in Iran, the president has created distance between the U.S. and key allies due to his stance on NATO, his imposition of tariffs, and his aspirations regarding Greenland, among other points of contention.

The conference was initially slated to commence on Sunday. Officials did not offer comment on whether the president’s birthday festivities on that day influenced the rescheduling of the G7 timeline.

On the concluding day of the summit, Wednesday, Trump is anticipated to journey to Paris for a dinner engagement with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles before commencing his return journey to Washington.
