Suppressing statisticians is a long-standing tactic for leaders aiming to consolidate their authority and suppress dissent. This has occurred throughout history, most recently in Venezuela and Turkey, where presidents have punished officials and economists who do not align with their agenda.
This behavior is not customary in American history. However, late Friday, it transpired here. President Trump dismissed the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics after unfounded claims that she manipulated July’s employment report. Today, we will explore the implications of this for our economy and our democracy.
