A private European aerospace startup has successfully completed the first test flight of its orbital launch vehicle in Norway.
Munich-based Isar Aerospace said it launched a Spectrum rocket from Andøya Island on Sunday.
The 92-foot-long Spectrum is a two-stage launch vehicle specifically designed to launch small and medium-sized satellites into orbit.
The missile was launched from the pad at 12:30 p.m. local time and flew for about 30 seconds before it was stopped, Isar said. The missile eventually fell into the sea.
“Our first test flight fully met our expectations and was very successful,” said Daniel Metzler, CEO and co-founder of Isar.
“We had a successful launch, 30 seconds of flight, and we were able to test our flight termination system.”
The launch was dependent on a number of factors including weather conditions and safety, and took place on Sunday after a week of adverse conditions, with the launch cancelled on Monday due to high winds and on Saturday due to weather restrictions.
