Police footage released from Gene Hackman death investigation

Authorities have released new video footage related to the investigation into the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa.

On Friday, images were released of agents who returned to the couple's Santa Fe home days after they were found to look for more evidence.

The bodies of Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were found on February 26 after maintenance and security staff called police.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office has been releasing redacted footage regularly since receiving court approval to release it, with any images of the dead obscured. More are expected to follow.

The latest release includes more than three hours of police body camera footage and builds on materials already released, including a detailed investigative report, photographs and hours of body camera and security camera footage showing the initial police actions.

New videos show authorities interviewing workers and returning to the home to search for additional evidence early in the investigation, before the causes of Hackman and Arakawa's deaths were known.

The hour-long video shows detectives searching the home in early March for Arakawa's laptop and other evidence. Her family members let them into the house and led them to the bathroom where her body was found.

In another video, a man who works as a pest control agent on the property tells police he hasn't seen Hackman in at least a month, but feels it's okay to not interact with the couple during his monthly visits.

He said the last time he saw Hackman, they waved at each other but did not speak.

“He looked frail,” the worker said. “He was bent over with a cane. His hair was disheveled.”

Authorities say Arakawa died of a rare disease called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rodent-borne illness that can cause symptoms including flu-like symptoms, headaches, dizziness and severe respiratory failure. Hackman is believed to have died about a week later of heart disease with complications from Alzheimer's disease.

One of the couple's three dogs was also found dead in a cage next to Arakawa's body, while the other two dogs were found alive.

The State Veterinary Laboratory attributed the dog's death to dehydration and starvation.
