Nine killed in shooting at Austrian school

A shooting at an educational institution in the Austrian city of Graz has killed nine people, including the suspected shooter, local authorities said.

Police said they believed the attacker acted alone, adding that the death toll was 10 people, including the shooter, and “several” others were seriously injured.

Graz Mayor Elke Kahr called the incident a “terrible tragedy,” the Austria Press Agency reported.

She added that the dead included students and at least one adult. Ms. Kar noted that many people were hospitalized with injuries.

Officials did not immediately provide information on the identity of the shooter.

Police confirmed they believed the attacker acted alone.

The special forces units included those sent to the BORG Dreierschutzengasse secondary school after being called out at 10:00 local time (9:00 BST).

At 11:30am local time (10:30am BST), police announced on social media site X that the school had been evacuated and everyone had been moved to a safe meeting place.

They indicated that the situation was “safe” and there was no longer a threat.

According to photos published by regional newspaper Kleine Zeitung, police were deployed in large numbers, with police and other emergency services guarding the area around the school and at least one police helicopter circling above.
