Governor Gavin Newsom stated that California will proceed with creating new congressional maps that he asserted "WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY" and enable Democrats to gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
"DONALD 'TACO' TRUMP, AS MANY REFER TO HIM, 'MISSED' THE DEADLINE!!! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW CREATE NEW, MORE 'BEAUTIFUL MAPS,' WHICH WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!)," Newsom posted on Tuesday night, in a manner reminiscent of President Donald Trump's occasional all-caps social media updates.
This declaration arrives amidst efforts by Texas Republicans to redraw congressional maps to benefit their party. The redistricting conflict in Texas has prompted blue states to threaten retaliation, with Newsom suggesting the elimination of five Republican-held seats in California.

The redistricting struggle in Texas — and possibly other states — carries national significance, with the control of the U.S. House potentially in jeopardy. The congressional map proposed by the Texas GOP could yield Republicans between three and five additional seats in the upcoming midterm elections — seats that could influence the effort of Republicans to sustain their slim majority in the U.S. House.
A representative for California State Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas confirmed to ABC News that the state legislature intends to unveil draft maps on Friday.
Newsom’s post did not provide specifics regarding the maps or how he intends to secure their approval, although he has previously mentioned considering placing the maps on the ballot during a special election in November.
The California governor indicated he would participate in a press conference this week with "influential" Democrats, but did not disclose details about the attendees.

Newsom sent a letter to Trump on Monday requesting that the president urge Texas Governor Greg Abbott and other Republican governors to halt their efforts to redraw congressional maps. Texas Democrats have left the state in protest against the proposed maps.
The Texas House of Representatives was once again unable to achieve a quorum on Tuesday. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows stated that the House will reconvene on Friday, adding that if a quorum is not present by then, Abbott will adjourn the current session and initiate a second special session to commence immediately.
