Minnesota Democratic Senator Tina Smith stated on Sunday that the Trump administration was "trying to conceal what transpired" in the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

ABC News acquired cell phone footage of the event recorded by the ICE agent who discharged the shots.

"What we are witnessing is the federal government — [Department of Homeland Security Secretary] Kristi Noem, Vice President [JD] Vance, [President] Donald Trump — trying to obscure the truth about what happened here in the Twin Cities, and I believe that people here and across the nation are not accepting it," Smith informed ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz.

Officials from the Trump administration have claimed that Good attempted to run over the ICE officer with her vehicle, leading the officer to shoot her in what they characterize as self-defense. Noem described Good's actions as an instance of "domestic terrorism."

Local leaders and numerous Democratic legislators have contested the DHS’s evaluation of the incident.

"You are asserting that the administration is trying to hide this shooting. That’s a serious allegation. What do you mean by that?" Raddatz inquired.

"What I mean is that their actions indicate they are trying to manipulate the narrative, to declare what transpired, without any investigation," Smith explained.

Smith proceeded to criticize the administration’s reaction to the shooting.

"What is crucial to remember here is that if we are to trust the federal government, how can we have faith in their ability to conduct an unbiased, impartial investigation when they have already made public their perspective on what they believe occurred at the outset of the inquiry?"

Smith mentioned that she has "seen nothing in any of the eyewitness videos or reports from that tragic day that would indicate that [Good] posed any threat to these officers."

"Legally, do you believe the ICE officer — certainly claimed he feared for his safety. Is that conceivable in your view?" Raddatz pressed.

"It’s difficult for me, based on the evidence I have observed, to see how he could genuinely feel at risk of harm," Smith responded.

The FBI is probing the shooting, but Minnesota officials indicated that the federal government has excluded them, preventing state agencies from accessing case materials.

Moreover, they have barred impartial state investigators from participating in the inquiry, who typically work alongside federal investigators when there are matters that require examination. Thus, it seems they have severely undermined any credibility by hastily jumping to conclusions.
