Hip-hop entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs' lawyer forced his ex-partner to read aloud the many loving text messages she sent him over the past few years, and she broke down in tears on Wednesday.
The second day of cross-examination, led by defense attorney Teni Geragos, was aimed at bolstering the defense's claim that the woman known as “Jane” took part in weekly sexual encounters with men whom Combs supervised and watched for hours.
Ms Geragos and Jane read aloud numerous text messages they exchanged throughout their relationship, which lasted from 2021 until Combs' arrest last September.
At one point, Jane read a message that said “no man has ever cared for me the way you do” and mentioned her undying love for the entertainment industry celebrity. Jane then stopped reading, started sniffling, and wiped her tears with a tissue.
After prosecutors objected and requested a discussion with the judge outside the jury's presence, Jane slouched in the witness chair, her hair falling to one side of her face.
At the defense table, Combs quietly read from one of the screens in front of him.
It was Jane's fifth day of testimony, and she admitted she still felt love for Combs. She had previously shared her reflections on understanding their relationship after three months of therapy.
Jane also stated that she would never want to have sex with any man other than Combs, but did it to please him.
At another point on Wednesday, Ms. Geragos asked Jane about her frequent feelings of anger toward Combs and her desire to end their relationship because she was concerned that he had begun to treat other women better.
Jane admitted that the Bad Boy Records founder once even bought another girl jewelry that matched the set he gave her.
Prosecutors say Combs was charged with sex trafficking and extortion because he used threats, drugs and violence to coerce women into unwanted sexual acts and enlisted employees and associates to achieve his goals.
Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces 15 years to life in prison.
Wednesday's testimony came during a shortened trial day that began in the afternoon. Ms. Geragos said she planned to wrap up her cross-examination by Thursday.
