Escaped Pet Zebra That Became Internet Sensation Finally Caught

A zebra that had been wandering around the US state of Tennessee for more than a week and caught the attention of the internet was captured on Sunday, local authorities said.

A zebra named Ed was successfully captured after being spotted in a pasture in the Christiana area of central Tennessee, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office. He was reportedly captured with the help of aerial teams.

“Ed was airlifted and flown back to his designated animal trailer by helicopter,” the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Video posted by the sheriff's office shows Ed, wrapped in a net with his head sticking out, being flown by helicopter to a trailer.

According to the sheriff, Ed arrived in Christiana on May 30. His owner reported him missing the next day.

The zebra was spotted and filmed running across Interstate 24, forcing police to shut down traffic. However, Ed managed to escape into a wooded area.

There have been numerous sightings on social media, and Ed has also been filmed speeding through city streets.

The zebra quickly became the subject of internet memes. One fake post showed Ed eating at a Waffle House, a popular restaurant in the southern United States. Other memes showed him traveling through different cities in Tennessee or begging on the side of the road.

The hunt for Ed comes a month after a kangaroo that ran onto an airport runway caused the closure of a section of interstate highway in Alabama.
