Doctors say Maradona should not have had surgery before he died

Diego Maradona should not have had surgery two weeks before his death because it was not a serious problem, a court has heard in a negligence case that led to his death.

After analysing Maradona's brain CT scan presented during the hearing, neurologist Martin Cesarini said: “It was not an urgent need for surgery.”

Neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque is one of seven medical professionals accused of negligence in connection with the death of the football great.

Neurologist Guillermo Pablo Barri also stated that he informed Luca that surgery was not required and that Maradona's clinical condition should simply be monitored.

Dr. Cesarini and Dr. Berry examined Maradona at a clinic in Buenos Aires, where he was transferred in early November 2020 for a medical examination.

Flavio Tunessi, another doctor from the same institution who also testified, said: “Luke told me it was a surgical procedure and he decided to transfer him.”

Luque is said to have ignored the opinions of his colleagues and transferred Maradona to another clinic, where on November 3 of that year the former Argentina captain underwent surgery to remove a hematoma.

Maradona, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986, died on November 25, 2020, while undergoing treatment at a hospital on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. He was 60.

According to the indictment, seven professionals charged with negligence – a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, doctors and nurses – failed to provide him with adequate medical care, which could have contributed to his death.
