China said it would impose a 34% tariff on all imports from the United States starting April 10.
The new tariff is in line with the level of the “retaliatory” tariff that was set by US President Donald Trump this week.
Beijing's Commerce Ministry also announced plans to tighten controls on the export of rare earth metals, materials used in high-tech products such as computer chips and batteries for electric vehicles.
The Chinese government also announced plans to place 27 U.S. companies under trade sanctions or export controls.
Beijing also said it had filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization over the tariffs.
