Following the introduction of a resolution by a leading Democrat to hold past Attorney General Pam Bondi in civil contempt, a GOP representative for the House Oversight Committee stated that Bondi will make an appearance on May 29 for a sworn statement as part of the group's Jeffrey Epstein inquiry.

Representative Robert Garcia, the foremost Democrat on the committee, put forth a resolution Wednesday morning to hold Bondi in civil contempt for neglecting to adhere to a subpoena.

"Just moments ago, we submitted formal contempt charges against Pam Bondi," Garcia informed reporters at the Capitol.

Soon after, a representative of the House Oversight Committee declared that "ex-Attorney General Pam Bondi is scheduled to appear on May 29. Further specifics will be shared at a later time."

Garcia welcomed the announcement during his conversation with reporters.

"Evidently, our actions are yielding results, as it's remarkable how Republicans only take action when we compel them to, such as issuing subpoenas and appearing before our committee," he remarked.

"Thus, I am delighted that Chairman [James] Comer is wary of this group behind us, and we will persist in pushing forward each and every time," Garcia added. "It's excellent to hear, assuming it's genuine. I am pleased he conveyed that message today."

Bondi was anticipated to give testimony privately on April 14 following the committee's bipartisan subpoena. However, subsequent to her dismissal from her position by President Donald Trump, the Justice Department conveyed that the subpoena no longer mandated her testimony regarding the Epstein situation.

Bondi's management of the Epstein documentation and the Justice Department's adherence to the Epstein Transparency Act became a focal point of criticism from both parties, inciting dissatisfaction within the Trump administration.

Garcia's endeavor for civil contempt, should it succeed, would escalate the issue to a federal court, where a judge would be tasked with determining whether Bondi is legally bound to comply with the subpoena.

As stated by the Congressional Research Service, civil contempt enables Congress to "pursue a civil ruling from a federal court affirming that the individual under scrutiny is lawfully required to abide by the congressional subpoena."

In January, the GOP-led House Oversight Committee cast a vote to hold former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton in criminal contempt. Ultimately, the Clintons consented to testify, and Republicans abandoned the contempt measure.

Comer has scheduled depositions with several additional witnesses in the investigation throughout June, prolonging the committee's Epstein probe into the summer months.
