At least three Serbian MPs were injured after smoke bombs and flares were thrown into parliament

At least three lawmakers were injured on Tuesday as chaos erupted in Serbia's parliament, with smoke grenades and flares being fired.

MPs were due to vote on a bill that would increase funding for higher education, but opposition factions argued the session was illegal and should first confirm the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and his cabinet.

Chaos broke out in parliament about an hour after the session opened, with the opposition blowing whistles and holding a banner reading “Serbia has risen to overthrow the regime!”

Video footage from the courtroom initially showed clashes between lawmakers, before flares and smoke grenades were thrown. Serbian media reported that eggs and water bottles were also thrown. Authorities later said three people were injured in the unrest, including lawmaker Jasmin Obradovic, who was taken to hospital.

Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic accused the opposition of being a “terrorist gang.” She added that one of the injured MPs was in critical condition.

The incident highlights a deep political crisis in the Balkan country, where months of anti-corruption protests have undermined the stability of the populist government.
