16 dead, dozens injured after bus flips on South African highway

A bus lost control and overturned on a highway near Johannesburg International Airport early on Tuesday, killing 16 people and ejecting some from the vehicle, South Africa's transport department said.

Ministry spokesman Colin Msibi said 12 victims died at the scene and four were taken to hospital.

He noted that, according to preliminary data, 11 passengers received serious injuries, and 24 received moderate to severe injuries.

“When we arrived we found people lying across the road,” said William Ntladi, Ekurhuleni Municipality's emergency services spokesman.

He added that two bodies were found under the rubble.

Bags, lunch boxes and a bottle of water lay scattered in the chaos.

The incident happened on Tuesday morning near OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. No other vehicles were damaged and the cause of the accident has not yet been established.

Officials said the bus was carrying passengers from the town of Kathleenghong, east of Johannesburg, and was near a highway exit.
