For the cover of our special issue on New York City, coming out May 12 and 19, 2025—our second edition to mark the magazine’s centennial this year—we turned to Christoph Niemann, an artist who lived in Brooklyn before moving to Berlin. Niemann has created a series of visual works that reflect his past life in New York, using old-fashioned newspaper halftone dots in his work. “Over time, a place gains character from small things: routine; smells; a certain shade of gray on the sidewalks,” he says. “Now, when I go back to New York, it’s not so much the specific place that makes me happy, but how these familiar details make me feel at home.”
