“Only in New York” may sound like a cliché, but that’s only because it’s so true. For Goings On, our New York City centennial issue, we asked our writers to share some of their favorite spots that can only be found… in New York. These are establishments that are uniquely charming in their uniqueness—places you never knew you needed, but once you discover them, you’ll be sad to see them disappear—often thanks in part to the charming characters who created them and the dedicated people who keep them running. Many of these places have been around for decades, relics of another era that insistently bring history into the present; all of them represent a sense of community that couldn’t exist without them.

This issue is full of New York characters; you’ll meet them in Julian Lucas’s pieces on artist Lorna Simpson, whose latest pieces were inspired by a meteorite she bought from “some guy upstate”; Ian Fraser’s on the price our city pays for the legs of its iconic pigeons; Lena Dunham’s on being a restless local; and Molly Fisher’s new memoir by Keith McNally, which details restaurateur Balthazar’s obsession with good lighting, the perfect wall color, and Instagramming. Gillian Laub’s gorgeous portfolio captures New York power brokers in their living rooms; as Naomi Fry notes, “even the humblest living rooms are full of meaning.” — Shauna Lyon
