Nearly five months into Donald Trump’s second term, he is not only turning America further into an autocracy with his seemingly endless stream of executive abuses, he is also spending significant taxpayer dollars doing so. For the cover of the June 23, 2025, issue, artist David Plunkert chose to visually capture one of the president’s latest excesses: his Army 250th Anniversary Parade, which coincides with his seventieth birthday, June 14, and will cost a whopping $45 million. Images can be powerful vehicles of irony. “The Washington Monument looming in the background serves as a granite counterpoint to Trump’s party hat,” Plunkert noted.
