Five rules of lingerie etiquette: straps, elastic and lace

The trendy checklists have overwhelmed us. 40 movies that every woman must watch to boost her self-esteem. 30 books to read to become more successful. 50 things to do in the fall. The sheer number of these lists is alarming.

There is a feeling of a shortage of time: when will you have time to do everything – watch movies, read books, and make mulled wine according to a new recipe… And then there is work, lessons with children, and household chores, no one has canceled. It's already becoming a bit scary to live…

So. Not all lists and rules are so ruthless. There are such useful recommendations that do not impose conventions, but help to ensure comfort. And this, you must agree, is important. What am I talking about? About what we cannot do without for a single day. About underwear and underwear etiquette. About how to make underwear a faithful ally.

First, let's define the concepts. Lingerie etiquette is a universal set of recommendations that apply regardless of a person's age. Sometimes fashion magazines offer provocative images that show off underwear or its details. But the essence of underwear is to remain underwear, read: invisible.

And in this respect, fashion, or to be more precise, hot trends that cool down faster than pies in the cold, go against the norms of underwear etiquette. This is a game, a way to attract attention, to cause a reaction, nothing more. Bloggers and street stylers live by this. But not everything they show is vital, necessary and worthy.

Strap rule

Bra straps and cups should remain invisible under clothing. This is necessary so that the image looks complete and professional. For example, under a tank top, it is better to choose a seamless bra with a special shape of straps or a top. This will help avoid the effect of a “second layer” at the back.

Transparency rule

Transparent blouses or chunky knit sweaters look stylish only in creative or evening styles, when transparency is part of the look. But in a business or everyday context, such transparency would be inappropriate.

Practical advice: under a white or translucent blouse, choose a bra in a flesh-colored shade that is as close to your skin as possible. The fabric should be smooth and opaque – this way the silhouette looks even, and attention is not distracted by lace details or prints. If the fabric of the outerwear is very thin, a simple plain top will help out under the bottom.

Stockings and tights rule

Stockings with a belt or silicone band look harmonious only when their contours are not visible under clothing. This is a rule of neatness: no lines or constrictions that “read” through the fabric. The optimal length of stockings is so that the cuff is a palm above the edge of the skirt or shorts. The same applies to tights: the belt should not peek out from under clothing.

The rule of elastic bands and fit

Elastic that cuts into the body can ruin even an expensive suit. It is important to choose underwear according to your body type:

  • if your stomach is round, it is better to choose models with a high fit and soft, seamless elastic;
  • if your hips are pronounced, shorts made of thin elastic fabric that do not cut in will be suitable;
  • For a slim figure, classic bikinis or seamless panties work well.
  • A simple rule: the lighter the fabric of the clothing, the thinner and smoother the linen should be.

Proportionality rule

Underwear should fit true to size and not cause discomfort. If you feel pressure or irritation when trying on, these feelings will only intensify with everyday wear.

What to pay attention to:

  • the bra should not leave marks on the skin;
  • panties should not cut into or, conversely, gather in folds;
  • the fabric should be breathable and pleasant to the touch;
  • High-quality stitching or seamless technology is a guarantee that underwear will not “betray” under a thin dress.

Practical tip: always try on underwear under the type of clothing you plan to wear it with. This way it's easier to assess how it “behaves” in reality.

Fashion nuances and exceptions

Modern trends often turn underwear into an element of outerwear – bralettes with a jacket, transparent tops for evening outings. This is permissible in a creative or festive context, where the main goal is to be spectacular. But in a classic or business style, different rules apply: underwear remains a background, not the main accent.
