Why some get everything and others get nothing: What is luck and how does it affect human behavior?

Surely each of us has wondered about the fairness of the distribution of life's blessings. Why do some always get everything, and others nothing? Or less than they could get. And, of course, the answer is often: we are simply unlucky. “They are lucky, and I am unlucky.” But is it only a matter of a lucky coincidence, being in the right place at the right time? For some, this is far from the case. Although circumstances are in their favor, a good result can still be an indicator of hard work and work done correctly both on oneself and on one's life, informs Ukr.Media.

These two factors – luck and work – are inextricably linked, even if people tend to deny it. Somewhere the first prevails, somewhere the second. However, the point is that, denying this fact, people do not even notice how luck shapes their behavior, and also affects their morale.

Success and denial of luck

We know famous people who have achieved a lot in this life, despite not the most favorable conditions. Someone, in order to make a name for themselves, had to fight their way from the very bottom, in order to promote their invention, they had to knock on the doors of various companies in search of an investor and a person who would believe in them.

We give these people credit, but we can't completely deny the role of luck. But, usually, few of them will admit that they were lucky. Or they will give it too little role.

Successful people least like it when they are called lucky. They deny luck in every way, shifting the emphasis only to their own merits. So, we can conclude that success makes a person more aggressive. It is the slightest mention of a lucky chance that irritates them. For them, recognizing luck is tantamount to losing control over the situation. Plus, a sense of duty to someone is added to everything, and they do not like it, since they believe that they should thank only themselves. Also, when denying luck, the feeling of anxiety and possible depression increases with any failure, which negatively affects the psychological health of these people.

But this position also has its advantages. For example, despite the experiences of unsuccessful outcomes, these people have a well-developed sense of responsibility, self-respect, and the ability to build logical connections. They believe that everything depends only on themselves, which, of course, affects their success. Therefore, denying luck is not such a bad way to achieve some heights. But it can cost you your health.

Case acceptance

But if there are those who deny the influence of chance on their lives, then there are also those who accept it completely and unconditionally. This also has its pros and cons. The benefits of such a model of behavior mostly have a positive effect on a person's mental health. Those who entrust their lives to the will of chance are more tolerant of failures. After all, if something did not work out, it means that they were just unlucky. This is probably where the pros end.

All the minuses flow into the behavior of these people. They are often irresponsible, amorphous and weak-willed. They do not have a clear plan of action, they do not have a clear view of the world, because it is completely subordinate to fatalism. But I would like to look at them and their faith in determination when troubles fall on their heads one after another. If in rare cases they treat failures quite stoically or indifferently, without disturbing their nervous system in any way, then here they can easily drown in the swamp of their bad luck. All because you need to be able to separate the will of chance and circumstances that you can influence yourself.

Luck and circumstances

The thing is that both those who completely deny the place for a good chance and those who, on the contrary, completely accept it, do not know how to separate luck and circumstances. For the former, there is only the second, and for the latter – the first. Let's try to consider their relationship using simple examples. We cannot choose who, where, at what time, in which family and with what skin color we will be born. We are born with a certain genetic set and traits that are passed on to us by inheritance. And our childhood, our well-being does not depend on us.

Let's take America in the 20th century as an example. As you know, black people in this country have always had a difficult situation. They continued to be oppressed, even though slavery was abolished. Their rights were limited, which is why the opportunity to live like ordinary people was absent. In connection with such a situation, can it be considered bad luck that a person was born black? Yes. But time passes – Martin Luther King grows up, who became the founder of the black struggle for equality. Is this luck? For the black population – yes. For Luther – using circumstances (politics, economics, social status) to achieve his goals.

Another example. A person was born into a wealthy family. When she grew up, her parents helped her open her own business, sponsoring the first steps. Soon the costs paid off, the business began to bring in a stable and high income. So, a person cannot deny the fact that she was lucky to be born into such a family. But creating a certain product that is in demand and brings profit, the ability to run a business competently, to set priorities correctly – this is subordinating the circumstances around her. But, usually, successful people will deny their luck, pulling the blanket over themselves and thanks only to their skills and education, which, by the way, were again given to them by their parents, which is also a great success.

Therefore, there is only one conclusion that suggests itself here. To maintain balance in life and in one's nervous system, a person needs to be able to find this golden mean between luck and circumstances. It is not worth deviating in only one direction.
