EU sets out how Apple should open up tech to competitors under digital rules

The European Union has outlined measures that Apple must implement to make its iPhone and iPad operating systems more accessible for effective interaction with competing technologies.

It is the first time a tech corporation has been forced to comply with the bloc's set of digital regulations, known as the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Last year, the European Commission launched two “specification procedures” to clarify the steps Apple needs to take to comply with a comprehensive set of rules that came into force last year.

In its decision, the commission detailed measures the iPhone maker must implement to ensure wider access to Apple's iOS operating system for smartwatches and other devices.

The document also introduces a second set of measures aimed at improving the transparency and efficiency of the process for software developers to request access to iPhone features.

The Commission also noted that Google was not taking sufficient measures to comply with the DMA.

Despite the changes, Google still favors its own services in search results, the company said.

The commission said in its preliminary findings that Google also prevents app developers from informing users about better options outside its Google Play Store.
