Corvette’s engineer, Cody Bulkley, participated in the marque’s Indy 500 anniversary spectacle at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.Chevrolet

Cody Bulkley could easily have been mistaken for one of the 33 racers battling it out in Sunday’s Indy 500 competition.

Donning his black racing apparel and protective headgear, Bulkley was present at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a separate significant occasion: maneuvering a 1,250-horsepower Corvette ZRX1 along a portion of the course as 250 lit candles burned perilously nearby. The objective? For the ZR1X to extinguish the flames atop a 186-foot cake, meticulously prepared by a set design crew.

The 186-foot “cake” was fabricated by a team specializing in stagecraft, per Chevrolet.Chevrolet

The America 250th anniversary demonstration was charted several weeks prior by Chevrolet, involving almost 40 individuals. Bulkley, a chassis control integration engineer for the Corvette, was tapped to execute the demonstration the previous month, rehearsing at General Motors’ testing area in Milford, Michigan.

“We arranged 250 whirligigs and measured everything precisely to ascertain if the blast from the LT7 exhaust would indeed put out the fire,” Bulkley shared with ABC News. “[Saturday’s act] functioned flawlessly on the initial attempt, and we accomplished the slide perfectly.”

He continued, “This is a fairly preposterous undertaking overall, to have the ability to accomplish this, to get IMS [Indianapolis Motor Speedway] to greenlight it. We understood we needed to make a splash. The corporation backing this, happening live and witnessed by the public, truly emphasizes how superb our direction is, how dedicated they remain to the marque and the ethos.”

Cody Bulkley mentioned to ABC News that he practiced the candle act at GM’s proving grounds in Milford, Michigan.Chevrolet

The cake, obviously, was not constructed of baking flour and sweet icing (presumably Styrofoam). And the large-format candles were actually ignited using propane gas. Fire wardens were positioned nearby as Bulkley fastened himself into the ZR1X, the most potent and radical Corvette in the brand’s history. Bulkley indicated it consumed approximately 3.4 seconds to extinguish the elongated row of candles, attaining a peak velocity of 90 mph.

Could he have accelerated more? Certainly, but Bulkley was reserving himself for several circuits around the oval-shaped track, where the ZR1X could genuinely extend its capacity and reach a maximum pace of 225 mph.

Cody Bulkley stated that the ZR1X took roughly 3.4 seconds to “blow out” the 250 candles, an act that commemorated America’s 250th anniversary.Chevrolet

“This vehicle exhibits such velocity and enjoyment, and on a racing circuit, you’re almost certain to establish a new standard everywhere you participate simply by showing up,” he noted. “It truly possesses the most comprehensive depth and expanse of any Corvette.”

Chevrolet refrained from disclosing the expenditure for the anniversary stunt; however, the U.S. brand has undertaken comparable stunts across the U.S. In February, a Silverado ZR2 truck was positioned atop Utah’s Castleton Tower. In 2023, the brand unveiled the Corvette E-Ray to the globe by having a driver perform donuts at The Rink at Rockefeller Center in New York. The ZR1X also served as the pace car at this year’s Indy 500 competition.
