Looking at a modern map of the world, any person wonders why the border between the USA and Canada is so straight, Ukr.Media reports.

At the end of the 15th century, a huge influx of European immigrants poured into the New World, dreaming of wealth, freedom, and a bright future. The territory of modern Canada and the United States began to be settled by the English and French, and the territory of Mexico began to be filled with Spanish colonizers.

Before the American Revolutionary War with Great Britain, no border between the countries simply existed, as both were populated by the same settlers and were colonies of the British Empire.

As a result of the Treaty of Paris and the emergence of a new country, the United States, in 1783, peace was supposed to emerge between the countries, but the situation on the border was turbulent, even to the point of armed clashes.

And only 45 years later, in 1818, when both sides were exhausted by negotiations, was a border established, which they decided to draw exactly along the 49th parallel, from Lake Erie in the east to the Rocky Mountains, in order to settle the countries' claims to fishing and hunting grounds.

The disputed points were finally resolved only by 1818, after the signing of the Anglo-American Convention.

The land border between the United States and Canada is the longest border between two countries in the world, at 8,963 km. This border does not have giant fences, crowds of soldiers and border guards. But there are customs checkpoints on major highways.
