President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that he is designating Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte as the interim director of national intelligence, following Tulsi Gabbard’s planned departure from her position on June 30.

Trump stated that Pulte will maintain his role as the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and will also continue his chairmanship of the mortgage entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

"William possesses extensive experience overseeing America’s most critical matters, including the stability and security of the Markets, and managing over $10 trillion at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a significant rise from its standing just 12 months ago," Trump communicated on his social media platform.

Pulte does not appear to have a readily apparent background in national intelligence.

Within the Trump administration, he is primarily recognized for initiating inquiries into several individuals perceived as political adversaries of the president, based on accusations of mortgage fraud and potential abuse of power. Those subjected to these investigations include Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Democratic Senator Adam Schiff, and former Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell. All have denied any wrongdoing.

At one point, the Department of Justice looked into whether Pulte and his staff were obstructing ongoing investigations. Pulte has not been implicated in any misconduct.

Gabbard announced her resignation last month due to her husband’s struggle with bone cancer.

Trump commended Gabbard for her "incredible job" and expressed that the administration will "miss her." At that time, he indicated that Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas would assume the acting DNI responsibilities.

However, in his announcement on Tuesday, Trump declared his intention to appoint Pulte to the temporary position. Pulte would require Senate approval if he were to be formally nominated for the role.
