A wise Eastern parable about how we create our own problems

A wise Eastern parable about how we create our own problems 2

In ancient China, there was an unbreakable tradition: when a girl got married, she would move to live with her husband's family, where she had to obediently serve him and his mother.

It so happened that after the wedding, a young wife simply could not stand the endless reproaches and nagging of her mother-in-law. Driven to despair, she decided to take a terrible step – to get rid of her forever.

The girl went to the local herbalist, an old friend of her father, and turned to him:

“I can't live under the same roof with my mother-in-law anymore. She's driving me crazy. Please, could you help me? I'd be very grateful.”

“What can I do for you?” the healer asked calmly.

“I want you to sell me poison. I will poison my mother-in-law and finally be free from all my troubles,” she replied decisively.

After deep thought, the old herbalist said:

“Okay, I'll help you. But you have to remember two things. First, you can't poison your mother-in-law right away, because people will immediately guess who did it. I'll give you a potion that will kill her slowly, drop by drop, so no one will even think of suspecting anything bad. Second, to completely remove all suspicion from you, you must control your anger. Learn to respect this woman, show love, listen carefully, and be patient. Then, when she passes away, no one will blame you.”

The girl agreed to all the conditions, took a package of herbs and began to add them to her mother-in-law's food every day, imperceptibly. At the same time, she learned to control her own emotions: to listen to the older woman, to show respect and care. When the mother-in-law noticed such amazing changes in her daughter-in-law's attitude, her heart melted, and she sincerely loved the girl. From now on, she told all the neighbors that her daughter-in-law was a real treasure that one could only dream of. In half a year, their relationship became as warm and trusting as between a mother and daughter.

And then one day the girl ran to the herbalist again, but this time she begged with tears:

“For God's sake, give me the antidote! Save my mother-in-law from the potion I fed her! I don't want her dead anymore. She has become the most beautiful woman in the world, and I love her with all my heart.”

The old sage smiled warmly and replied:

“Calm down, child. I didn't give you any poison. Those herbs are just ordinary fragrant spices. The real poison was hidden only in your head, and you were able to heal yourself from it.”
