A new large-scale study found that people who use generative artificial intelligence on a daily basis are at higher risk of developing symptoms of depression. What's more, they were more anxious and irritable.
Main theses:
- Using AI can be both beneficial and dangerous.
- According to researchers, people aged 25-64 are at risk.
AI could be dangerous for your mental health
It is worth noting that the negative effect was associated with the use of artificial intelligence specifically for personal needs.
If people use it only for work and study, it may even help reduce the risk of depression, writes JAMA Network Open.
As part of a new large-scale study, scientists decided to conduct an online survey among more than 20,000 AI users.
People had to honestly answer questions about the frequency and purpose of using artificial intelligence, the frequency of using social media. In addition, surveys were analyzed to diagnose symptoms of depression.
Thus, it became known that about 10% of participants used generative artificial intelligence at least once a day, and more than 5% used it several times a day.
The researchers concluded that daily use of artificial intelligence was associated with a nearly 30 percent higher risk of moderate depression.
What is important to understand is that the risk was highest among those who used artificial intelligence for personal purposes, not for work or study, and among people aged 25-64.
