Iran and the United States will begin organizing meetings of experts to discuss aspects of a potential deal on Tehran's fast-growing nuclear program, a senior Iranian diplomat said Saturday after a second round of talks in Rome.
President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff held “direct and indirect” talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Rome on Saturday, a U.S. official said.
A Trump administration source, speaking anonymously to discuss a confidential diplomatic meeting, said the meeting at the Omani embassy resulted in “very good progress” in discussions on Tehran's nuclear program, and the two sides agreed to hold another meeting next week.
Araghchi said nuclear experts will meet in Oman before the next meeting between him and Wittkoff, scheduled for April 26.
Following the meeting at the Omani embassy in Rome's Camilluccia district, the American side made no immediate statements.
But President Donald Trump is pushing for a quick deal with Iran, threatening military action.
“The talks took place in a constructive atmosphere and I can say that they are moving forward,” Araghchi said in an interview with Iranian state television.
“I hope that after technical discussions we will be in a better position.”
He added: “This time we were able to achieve a deeper understanding of some principles and goals.”
