A gunman believed to be from Indiana was shot and killed by Secret Service agents near the White House after an incident early Sunday morning, authorities said.
No one else was injured in the shooting, which occurred about a block from the White House around midnight, according to the Secret Service. President Donald Trump was in Florida at the time of the shooting.
The Secret Service received information from local law enforcement about a suspected “suicide bomber” traveling from Indiana and located his vehicle and a man matching his description nearby.
“As officers approached, the male began brandishing a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which our officers opened fire,” the Secret Service said in a statement.
The man was hospitalized. The Secret Service said his condition was “unknown.”
The Metropolitan Police Department will conduct an investigation as law enforcement officers were involved in the shooting, but no further details were provided.
