Saturday sport: Women’s 4x400m team run in the final, Manchester City win Community Shield

There is a potential medal on offer on the track for Team Ireland on the penultimate day of the Olympic Games in Paris.

The women’s 4×400 metre relay team contest the final in the Stade de France this evening.

400-metre finalist Rhasidat Adeleke has confirmed her participation in tonight’s race.

That is due on track just before 8:15pm.,

There will also be medals won tonight in the men’s 800m, the women’s 1500m, and the women’s 100m hurdles.

 

Soccer

Here at home, there’s a full programme on offer in the Women’s Premier Division today.

Defending champions Peamount United were beaten 3-2 by DLR Waves.

Three games are just getting underway this evening – league leaders Shelbourne are away to Cork City,

Galway United do battle with Shamrock Rovers,

Treaty United welcome Bohemians to Markets Field.

At half 7, Athlone Town take on Sligo Rovers.

Manchester City have won the community shield 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Wembley.

Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to give United the lead in the 81st minute.

Birthday boy Bernardo Silva equalised with 89 minutes on the clock.

The game will go straight to penalties if it’s level after 90 minutes.

 

Rugby

The Women’s Interpro Series kicks off this afternoon.

Kathryn Dane returns to play following a near-two-year absence to captain Ulster in their trip to Munster.

That game gets underway at half 2.

That’s followed by the meeting of Leinster and Connacht at Energia Park from quarter to 5.

South Africa made the perfect start to their Rugby Championship campaign.

The World Champions were 33-7 winners over Joe Schmidt’s Australia in Brisbane.

Argentina stunned holders New Zealand with a 38-30 win in Wellington.

 

Racing

The Group-1 Phoenix Stakes is the feature of an eight-race card at The Curragh on Saturday afternoon.

The big race is off at 25-to-5, with the card itself underway at 1:45pm.

There’s also a seven-race card at Kilbeggan this evening, with the first going to post at 5pm.
