OpenAI Working on X-Type Social Network – Report

OpenAI is developing its own X-style social network, The Verge reported Tuesday, citing multiple people familiar with the matter.

The report states that there is an internal prototype that focuses on image generation using ChatGPT and includes a social feed.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has privately reached out to outsiders to provide feedback on the project, which is still in its early stages, according to the Verge. It is unclear whether the company plans to roll out the social network as a standalone app or integrate it into ChatGPT, the report said.

The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the matter.

The potential move could deepen the conflict between Mr. Altman and billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of X and co-founder of OpenAI, who left the startup in 2018 before it became a leader in generative artificial intelligence.

The conflict has escalated in recent months. In February, a consortium of investors led by Mr. Musk made an unsolicited $97.4 billion offer for control of OpenAI, but Mr. Altman quickly turned it down, saying, “No thanks.”

Last year, Mr Musk filed a lawsuit against ChatGPT's creator and Mr Altman, arguing that they had strayed from OpenAI's original goal of developing AI for the benefit of humanity, not for corporate gain.

Earlier this month, OpenAI filed a countersuit against Mr. Musk, accusing him of systematic harassment and attempts to hinder the company’s transition to a commercial model. Both sides plan to begin a jury trial next spring.

OpenAI's social network could also put the company in direct competition with Facebook owner Meta, which is reportedly developing a separate service called Meta AI. In February, Mr. Altman responded to X in response to media reports about Meta's plans, saying “maybe we'll build a social app.”

Both Meta and X have access to large amounts of data—public content posted by users on their social media platforms—which they use to train their AI models.
