Meta says it will resume AI training using publicly available content from European users

Social network Meta has announced it will begin using publicly available content from users in Europe to train its artificial intelligence models, resuming work that was suspended last year after activists raised concerns about data privacy.

The company that owns Facebook and Instagram said it would train its AI systems using public posts and comments shared by adults in the 27-nation European Union.

“User interactions with Meta AI — such as questions and queries — will also be used to train and improve our models,” the company said in a blog post.

Meta made the decision after launching its Meta AI assistant to users in Europe last month, though it became available in the US and other major markets much later.

The company's efforts to train artificial intelligence have run afoul of tough EU data privacy laws that give citizens control over how their personal information is used.

The Vienna-based group NOYB, led by activist Max Schrems, has filed complaints with various national privacy authorities about Meta's AI training intentions and urged them to intervene before the company begins training the next generation of AI models.

Meta confirmed that in December a group of EU privacy regulators had “confirmed” that its initial approach was in line with legal requirements.

The company said it would not use private messages to train its AI model and reiterated that it was following the lead of competitors such as Google and OpenAI, “who have already used European user data to train their AI models.”

Meta will notify EU users of the learning process and provide a link to a form they can use to object at any time.

“We will take into account all forms of objections,” company representatives said.
