"He is a PATRIOT with extensive operational expertise, and a proven leader with DECADES of experience apprehending the most dangerous individuals," Trump stated in a social media update.

Schroyer, who previously served as a Trooper for the Oklahoma State Police and as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, presently holds the position of senior advisor to Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin.

Mullin, a former senator from Oklahoma, and Schroyer share a long-standing connection, and Schroyer was Mullin’s preferred choice to head ICE, a source familiar with the decision informed ABC News.

David Venturella has been fulfilling the duties of acting ICE director since he succeeded Todd Lyons, who relinquished the role on May 31. Ventrella will continue in his capacity until Schroyer receives confirmation, as indicated by the source.

ICE has not had a director confirmed by the Senate since 2017.

Democrats, proponents of immigration reform, and local officials have voiced strong disapproval of ICE’s methods, citing accusations of racial profiling and forceful tactics.

The spotlight on ICE intensified following the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, in Minneapolis in January, carried out by immigration officers.

Todd Lyons, who served as the acting ICE director during the inaugural year of Trump’s second term, resigned in May, stating his desire to dedicate more time to his family.

The news of Lyons’ departure surfaced more than a month after Trump dismissed former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
