The American physician who contracted Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been repatriated to the United States.

Dr. Peter Stafford; his spouse, Dr. Rebekah Stafford; and their four offspring arrived securely on Monday, according to Serge, the international Christian missionary association that employs the couple.

"I am overwhelmed with thankfulness to the Almighty for safeguarding my life, to all those who offered prayers on my behalf, and to the numerous healthcare professionals who attended to me. I am feeling well and grateful to be reunited with Rebekah and the children," Peter Stafford stated in a declaration. "Our thoughts and prayers persist for those in Congo confronting this devastating epidemic and for the ongoing endeavors to contain the disease."

Peter Stafford’s diagnosis was confirmed while he was providing care to patients in the DRC, and he was subsequently transported to Germany for specialized medical treatment. He received care at Charité University Hospital in Berlin.

Rebekah Stafford and their four children were also relocated to Germany and housed in a separate section of the hospital as individuals with high-risk exposure.

The family was released from the hospital earlier this month, and Peter Stafford has remained free of Ebola since May 30, as reported by Serge. U.S. public health officials are in consistent communication with Peter Stafford, Serge indicated.

"Our hearts ache for our Congolese friends and colleagues, and for all those affected by this outbreak," said Matt Allison, executive director of Serge, in a statement. "Our mission is more vital than ever as we deploy medical assistance and resources to our partners in the region."

Allison further commented, "We extend our sincere thanks to those who have prayed and contributed generously to this cause. We also wish to convey our profound appreciation to the numerous international bodies, governments, and associates who provided care for the Stafford family and facilitated their safe return."

The epidemic was initially identified in the DRC’s northeastern Ituri province, with the health ministry officially confirming cases on May 15. This marks the 17th Ebola virus disease outbreak in the DRC, which is the second-largest country in Africa and ranks fourth in population.

Congo’s Health Minister Roger Kamba announced at a press conference on Monday evening that the DRC has now documented 808 confirmed Ebola cases and 192 fatalities. In neighboring Uganda, at least 19 cases – predominantly associated with travel – and two deaths have been confirmed, according to the Ugandan health ministry.
