The Bluegrass State is witnessing the costliest House primary competition in the nation’s history, as President Donald Trump actively seeks to unseat current Rep. Thomas Massie amidst their intense conflict.
In one of the few MAGA-influenced confrontations of the 2026 midterm elections, Massie is defending his position against Ed Gallrein, the Trump-supported contender who is a Navy SEAL and a fifth-generation farmer.

Massie has been the representative for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District since 2012, but securing a seventh term has become a challenging undertaking.
The immense financial investment in this campaign has already surpassed previous records, making it the most expensive House primary ever. Data from AdImpact reveals that the race has seen over $32.6 million allocated to advertising and reservations.
A conservative libertarian, Massie has recently drawn the disapproval of Trump due to his efforts to publicize the Jeffrey Epstein files, his vote against the president’s broad domestic tax legislation, and his outspoken disapproval of a potential war with Iran.
In addition to labeling Massie a "moron" during the National Prayer Breakfast in February, Trump also attacked Massie’s spouse and accused the congressman of being "disloyal to the United States of America" during an event held in Kentucky in March.
Massie and Trump have shown mutual support in the past, and the congressman has been quick to mention the numerous instances where his votes align with the Republican Party’s and support the president. However, Massie also welcomes his willingness to challenge Trump.
"I often state that I vote with Republicans 91% of the time, but when they are covering up for pedophiles, driving the country into bankruptcy, or initiating another war, they cannot count on me," Massie expressed during a campaign fundraiser in March.

During an appearance on "The Tucker Carlson Show" earlier this month, Massie acknowledged the distinct possibility of losing the primary, stating that the "one whistleblower, so to speak, in Congress will disappear."
On the contrary, Gallrein has pledged allegiance to the president and underlined his dedication to the "America First" agenda under Trump.
"You deserve a genuine, true Republican conservative who stands firmly alongside our president and the Republican Party, opposing the Democrats who are attempting to ruin our nation," Gallrein stated earlier in the year when Trump visited the district.

Trump endorsed Gallrein even before the official launch of his congressional campaign, and the president admitted his willingness to support nearly anyone to ensure Massie’s defeat.
“I simply wanted — someone with a pulse to defeat Massie, and I found someone with a pulse, but also a large, brilliant intellect and a true patriot,” Trump remarked while standing with Gallrein earlier this year.
