The dismembered body of a Colombian athlete (and professional soldier) was found in a river by fishermen. The head and limbs were missing. The boxer's remains were identified by his mother by characteristic tattoos – a snake on his torso, a dragon's head on his shoulder, his brother Christian's name on his neck and a heart on his chest.

The evening before his alleged murder, Gomez Sandoval lost by unanimous decision to Leider Galvis in the main event of the WBA Future Champions Colombia tournament in Barranquilla.

After the fight, the boxer, who previously had six professional wins (five of them by knockout), spent some time with his mother and daughter. He was last seen alive leaving his house. That same evening, his phone was turned off, causing concern among relatives who reported him missing.
The boxer's trainer, Miguel Angel Guzman, told local media that he was unaware of any possible threats or personal problems that could explain the killing.
“He loved boxing since childhood,” said the boxer's father, Luis Gomez . “He dreamed of becoming a world champion. He told me: 'You'll see, Dad, I'll become a champion.' I replied that I loved him with all my heart. He dreamed of giving his daughter a better life… The only thing I'm asking for now is justice.”
