By pure chance, the former football player and his wife heard the smell of smoke in the middle of the night and miraculously survived.
Popovych's former teammates at Partizan posted photos from the scene and a call for help on social media.
“The house of former Partizan player and coach Zvonko Popovych burned down. All fans are asked to help with donations if they have the opportunity,” the message says.

According to the publication, Zvonko Popovych was on the verge of death a few years ago. At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, he fell seriously ill. The former football player spent 13 days in the hospital, eight of which were in critical condition.
A native of Krupan, defender Zvonko Popović played for Partizan from 1980 to 1985. He has 52 matches and one goal in the Belgrade club's jersey (the footballer, in particular, was a participant in the historic European Cup confrontation between Partizan and the English Queens Park Rangers, when after a 2:6 away defeat, the Balkans defeated their opponent at home 4:0 and were eliminated from the tournament). Popović also played in Greece for Panseraykos, then in his homeland for Budućnost, Vojvodina, and in France for Angers and Perpignan, where he ended his football career in 1990. As a coach, he worked in the youth teams of Teleoptika and Partizan from 1998 to 2011.
