
The famous Ukrainian track and field athlete and Olympic champion Lyudmila Gurevich (née Shevtsova, married Lysenko) has died at the age of 91, the Ukrainian Athletics Federation reports. The world's oldest Olympic champion, who lived under forged documents, has passed away.

During her sports career, the middle-distance runner represented the Avangard club from Dnipropetrovsk (now Dnipro) and competed for the Soviet Union national team. At the 1960 Olympics in Rome, she won a gold medal in the 800 meters with a world record.
In the same discipline, Gurevich won bronze at the 1954 European Championships and repeatedly became the USSR champion at various distances.

After her career, Lyudmila Gurevich worked as a coach, and a tournament named after her was held in Dnipro. In 2008, the NOC of Ukraine awarded the athlete in the nomination “Sports Glory of Ukraine”. The athlete lived in Israel with her son's family for the last years of her life.
Previously, “FACTS” reported that the legendary Soviet basketball player, who twice won the Olympic Games and survived the amputation of her leg, had died.
