On Saturday, April 4, the best scorer in the history of the Russian national handball team, world champion and Olympic champion Eduard Koksharov, who died suddenly at the age of 50 in a hotel near Minsk, his last club, Belarusian Meshkov-Brest, reported. Previously, the multiple Russian handball champion died after falling from the 8th floor.

World handball star Koksharov was at a training camp for the Belarusian team, which he has led since 2023, and did not show up for breakfast in the morning. After that, the players found him lifeless in his room.

“No one has yet given an exact diagnosis, but most likely it was a stroke. As far as I know, he had a microstroke in January, but he didn't pay any attention to it. The second case ended like this,” said Honored USSR Handball Coach Vladimir Maksimov .

Eduard Koksharov was one of the best left wingers of his generation. He won the Slovenian championship eight times with Celje and the Champions League twice. The handball player also became the champion of Russia twice with the Chekhov Bears. For the national team of the aggressor country, he scored an incredible 1,110 goals in 226 international matches – a record that has not been broken to this day.

Eduard Koksharov was the top scorer in the history of the Russian national handball team.

His main international achievements include the title of world champion in 1997 and Olympic champion in 2000. Koksharov also won silver at the 1999 World Championship and the 2000 European Championship, as well as bronze at the 2004 Olympic Games. From 2017 to 2020, he was the head coach of the Russian national team, and won seven trophies at the helm of Meshkov-Brest.

Koksharov has reportedly been married twice. He has two children with his first wife, Natalia, a 26-year-old daughter, Dina (a designer), and a 22-year-old son, Alexander (a football player for Krasnodar). The athlete had no children with his second wife, Elena, but he raised his wife's daughter and son from a previous relationship.
