Tragedy struck the family of one of the most decorated female athletes in the history of sports, three-time Olympic hammer thrower Anita Wlodarczyk from Poland, who once suffered an injury while apprehending a carjacker. Her father, Andrzej Wlodarczyk, who had recently had serious health problems, died in hospital at the age of 68, Przeglad Sportowy reports.

Wlodarczyk Sr. was reportedly one of the pioneers of the development of speedway in the country. At one time, he was the president of the Pavart Rawicz club and also headed the Polish Speedway Federation.

In addition, at the dawn of Anita Wlodarczyk's sports career, her father was her coach and led her daughter to victory at the European Junior Cycling Championships.
